Heart of Creation Story-
In 2017, a young man in my hometown, Fulton MO, was found encased in concrete in a plastic tub in a storage unit. The details are as horrible as imaginable and worse. This man was dependent upon services put in place to protect him and allow him to live as peacefully and productively as possible. He was failed by every single person, every single program and every single agency he encountered.
At that time our daughter, Shelby, was 15 years old and our family was enduring the trauma of middle school and high school. Shelby has KBG Syndrome. She has far outlived and overcame so many of the milestones we were told she would never do and is still beating the odds. However, Shelby too, will be dependent on these same kinds of services and programs as she grows.
We have all worked so hard to get Shelby to where she is today. The thought of putting her in the current environment that has been created for adults with special needs makes my stomach turn. I know if Shelby is going to continue to thrive and live as independently as possible, it’s going to have to be in a program that I create for her. One that I believe in, one that no one lives in fear of, one that everyone has a seat at the table, one that no one gets lost. That’s the heartthat WeBuilt-Fulton,MO was created from.
Everyone matters,
